It’s a question that’s often asked. Vincent’s illness revealed itself as he began to hallucinate and suffer from attacks in which he lost consciousness.
In the late evening of 23 December 1888, Vincent got into yet another argument with Paul Gauguin, the artist with whom he had been working in Arles. During this argument he got one of these attacks and later used a knife to cut off his left ear.
Police found Vincent the next morning at his house and took him to the hospital. Meanwhile Gauguin sent a telegram to Vincent’s brother Theo, who made his way to Arles that same evening to be by his brothers’ bedside. 
Vincent could later not recall anything about the event.
