The great Maria Schneider, daughter of French actor Daniel Gelin and Romanian Marie-Christine Schneider, who ran a bookshop in Paris, was BOTD in 1952 and died in 2011 at the age of 58. I was obsessed with Michelangelo Antonioni's "The Passenger" (1975) when I was in film school (the screenplay was co-written by Peter Wollen, after all), viewing it multiple times in the theatre, and I was always amazed how poised and natural Schneider is alongside the experienced, louche, and world-weary Jack Nicholson. Sadly, most people will remember Schneider for the infamous butter scene in Bertolucci's "Last Tango in Paris" (1972), in which the 19 year old actress was humiliated by the use of a stick of butter in a simulated sex scene (in fact, a scripted rape scene - the butter was the shocking improvisation by the two conniving middle aged men that she found humiliating). The incident remains the most lasting tarnished footnote in Brando's long career (along with Bertolucci's - interesting to note that Schneider remained friends with Brando until his death, but never reconciled with the director). Schneider later claimed to have felt "raped" by the scene, and believed that the industry did not protect her and that the incident significantly impacted her career and personal life. The film is remarkable, and even more remarkable is the fact that Schneider holds her own against at the time arguably the biggest movie star in the world, especially considering the rape-y atmosphere on set. (Incidentally, actress Ursula Andress has stated that she lost her virginity at 17 to a 32 year old Daniel Gelin in 1953, a year after Maria Schneider was born. Just doing the math!) Schneider suffered a mental breakdown, struggled with severe heroin addiction, and attempted suicide in the years following the film's release. Her reputation for being "difficult"—partly due to her refusal to do further nude scenes—led to her becoming largely unwelcome in the industry for a time. In her later years, Schneider became an advocate for equality and better working conditions for actresses, helping pave the way for modern practices like the use of intimacy coordinator
