Portrait of Tsarevich Alexei Romanov with his tutor Pierre Gilliard (who taught him French) in 1916.Pierre Gilliard was a Swiss academic who served as the French language tutor to the children of Emperor Nicholas II for thirteen years.
Alexei, the heir apparent to the Russian throne, was afflicted with hemophilia, which required constant supervision by his family and tutors.
Gilliard authored a memoir titled Thirteen Years at the Russian Court, documenting his time with the Romanov family.
