"A Quarrel at the Palace between Asano Naganori and Kira Yoshihisa", a 1921 lithograph from the series "The Loyal Rōnin" (技師体幹 - Gishi Taikan) by Kobori Tomoto (小堀鞆音; 26 March 1864 – 1 October 1931), a Japanese (Yamato-e) painter in the Western style.
Image size (h x w, within the margins): 9 3/4 x 13 1/2 inches
Album page (h x w, with full margins): 12 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches
The style reflects the historical accuracy favoured by artists like Tomoto, often depicting scenes from Japanese history or classical literature, in this case the infamous incident at Edo Castle that sparked the true tale of a group of 47 samurai who became rōnin (leaderless samurai) after their daimyō (feudal lord) Asano Naganori was compelled to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official, Kira Yoshinaka, who had insulted him. (The names were changed slightly in illustrations like this to avoid censorship but the public who bought such art were well aware of the real names being depicted.)
From my personal collection of Japanese art.
