Japanese Woodblock Print — The Spider Demon’s Trap by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1855)
As Minamoto no Yorimitsu lies weakened, a presence slips through the stillness of the room. From behind the hanging cloth, a form emerges, its pale face and yellow eyes fixed with something not human. It is not sudden violence, but a quiet intrusion, entering at the moment of greatest vulnerability.
Yorimitsu senses it. His hand moves toward the sword without haste. The gesture holds no panic, only readiness, as if the struggle has already begun within.
Patterned robes and shadowed form meet in a narrow space. In that tension, the unseen draws close, and the boundary between what is and what lingers begins to thin.
