Rare original Moomin illustration in colour!

Colours were essential to Tove Jansson as a painter, but the illustrations in the Moomin novels were always in black and white. The exception to the rule came in 1961 when Tove made several illustrations in colour for Magia d’inverno, the Italian edition of Moominland Midwinter. Since 2021, this coloured edition of the beloved book has been available in English as well.

After being extremely busy with the Moomin comics, the growing Moomin business, as well as tens of murals in the 1950s, Tove found her way back to oil painting in the 1960s. In the painting The Shore, done in 1960, one can clearly see that Tove favoured specific colours at that time, using the same palette in both the painting and the coloured Moomin illustrations.
