MeMoMu_THOT_087 BLINKING "TORTURE" _ JEREMIAH DENTON / MUSJÖÖ LIBLIKAS

His defiance made him a target for harsher treatment, yet he continued to protect fellow POWs by taking responsibility for acts of resistance. When he was finally released in 1973, he famously declared, “We are honored to have had the opportunity to serve our country under difficult circumstances,” a line that captured both his resilience and the quiet heroism that defined his captivity.

Admiral Jeremiah Denton Jr.’s act of blinking “TORTURE” in Morse Code during a 1966 televised propaganda interview was far more than a clever signal, it was the first confirmed instance of a prisoner of war communicating covertly under enemy control on camera. Denton had been shot down over North Vietnam and endured relentless beatings, starvation, and psychological pressure.
During the staged interview, he was expected to praise his captors, but instead he used the only tool left to him, his eyes, to expose the truth. Naval Intelligence analysts watching the broadcast immediately recognized the pattern, confirming that American POWs were being abused despite North Vietnam’s public denials.
Denton’s resistance didn’t end there. Throughout his nearly eight years in captivity, he became a symbolic leader among American prisoners, encouraging others to maintain discipline and resist indoctrination despite torture, isolation, and mock executions.
