The town of Wareham has always been stained in blood. In November 1643, the Parliamentarian garrison at Poole sent out two hundred musketeers in a flotilla of boats under the command of Captain John Ley of Bridport.
They travelled from Poole Quay up the River Frome, known locally as the Wareham River, towards the old Saxon market town of Wareham, which was held by Royalist forces. After several skirmishes along the riverbanks, and despite being taunted with cries of “now come of ye Roundheads if ye dare”, the men of Poole succeeded in capturing the town, proving themselves “too wise for such untutored freshwater sailors”.
The episode also reflects a touch of local rivalry, as Wareham, lying halfway up a tidal river rather than on the coast, was not regarded by Poole’s seafaring men as a true maritime port, a view they likely still hold today.
