About

A customisable framed wall art print of Popular Octopus Games, 1840-1842, Utagawa Kuniyoshi.

The woodblock is titled Ryuko tako no asobi ("Popular Octopus Games") and shows a group of anthropomorphised octopi engaging in a variety of human activities including sumo wrestling, dancing and playing musical instruments.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi ranks among the renowned ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period, alongside Hokusai, Kunisada (Toyokuni III) and Hiroshige. He is particularly noted for his warrior prints and prints of bizarre and comic subjects. He also created fine Western-style landscape prints during the 1830s and early 40s.

Kuniyoshi had an extremely fertile imagination and produced a steady stream of innovative designs. He introduced new energy into the world of ukiyo-e prints. The men and women of the Floating World (ukiyo) - brothel employees, kabuki actors, wrestlers and the fashionable, pleasure-seeking young - lived outside the rigid social system of the Edo period (1615-1868). Ukiyo-e (pictures of the Floating World) are visual records of their world.

All customisable art prints are available framed or unframed in a choice of sizes and frame colours.
