#OnThisDay in 1910, around 300 suffragettes gathered outside the Houses of Parliament in what became known as Black Friday.
The women were protesting after the government failed to pass the Conciliation Bill, which would have granted limited voting rights to women. What began as a peaceful demonstration turned violent, as police brutally attacked the protesters with many women beaten, manhandled, and even sexually assaulted.
The violence continued for six hours. Over 200 women were arrested, and at least two later died from their injuries.
