In the 2023 historical drama Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Depp returns to the screen as King Louis XV, delivering his entire performance in French. The film marks the directorial debut of Maïwenn, who also co-wrote, produced, and stars in the titular role. It was Depp’s first major feature in three years.
The story follows Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), born an illegitimate daughter of an impoverished seamstress in 1743. Intelligent, charming, and determined to transcend her circumstances, she rises through Parisian society with the support of the Count du Barry. When she is introduced to King Louis XV through the Duke of Richelieu, the meeting surpasses every expectation. The King falls deeply in love.
With Jeanne, Louis XV rediscovers joy, vitality, and companionship, eventually elevating her to the position of his official mistress. Despite her humble origins, Jeanne becomes one of the most powerful women at Versailles.
The film’s sumptuous visual world is another star of the production. Chanel’s atelier collaborated with costume designer Jürgen Doering, formerly of Karl Lagerfeld, Guy Laroche and Yves Saint Laurent, to create the opulent gowns and court dress. Rich with embroidery, jewels, and the unmistakable grandeur of 18th-century France.
