Japanese Woodblock Print: Inumura Daikaku and the Cat Spirit
Utagawa Toyokuni III, Edo period, 19th century

Behind Inumura Daikaku, who grips his sword, a white haired cat spirit rises with fierce claws and bared teeth.

The scene tells of a tragic bond between parent and child turned into something monstrous. Facing the being that has taken his father’s form, Daikaku must judge right and wrong beyond blood ties.

His sharp gaze and low stance show the resolve to master fear and follow his own sense of duty.

Rich costume, animal ferocity, and kabuki drama come together in a powerful image of courage and restraint.
